It's a real treat to see an expert work with hand tools. Frank Klauz came to national attention about 20 years ago with a series of profiles and articles in Fine Woodworking. A working cabinetmaker with a large shop in New Jersey, Mr. Klaus has always stressed the productivity gained from using hand tools correctly and appropriately. In this video, modeled after his numerous popular live demonstrations, he takes the basic hand tools and shows you how to tune them for use in the shop. He shows you how to clean up, sharpen, and use a regular bench chisel; clean, tune, sharpen and flatten the bottom of a junk yard Stanley bench plane; and joint, set, and sharpen an inexpensive backsaw, so that it cuts straight, smooth, and with less effort. He also shows you some practice exercises, from paring with a chisel to laying out dovetails with a saw, that will build your confidence and competence with hand tools. For me, the best part of this video is watching a master at work. Just the very act of seeing a master work so easily and fluidly helps me make my work better. The important lesson of this video is that the skill is possible to learn: it isn't magic and it doesn't require fancy tools. It just takes practice and some basic technique, which the video will help you develop.
